What are the health benefits of Gorton’s seafood?

At Gorton’s, our mission is to help people everywhere enjoy the goodness of great seafood. Seafood is a lean protein that contains natural omega-3 and critical vitamins and minerals including iron, zinc, and vitamins A, B and D. Eating seafood mayaid brain development, promote heart health, help fight obesity and improve your overall health. That’s why the USDA, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and American Diabetes Association all recommend eating at least two servings or 8 ounces of seafood each week.

What are omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats that may promote brain development, heart health and may also reduce the risk of chronic disease. Seafood is a natural source of two healthy omega-3 fatty acids: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Since our bodies cannot make omega-3, it’s important to regularly include them in our diets.

Are Gorton’s products affected by the release of radioactive waters around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan?

We appreciate concern regarding the 2011 release of radioactive waters around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan and the potential impact on the safety of the world’s fish supply.

We would like to reassure all Gorton’s customers that Gorton’s products are not affected, and are safe to consume. We do not source, process, or import any seafood or other raw materials from the area affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, nor do any of our products or raw materials travel through areas that would have been affected. The seafood used in the majority of Gorton’s products is caught in the Bering Sea, primarily off the coast of Alaska. There is no issue of contamination either in the atmosphere or in the ocean—nor is there any immediate or anticipated threat of harmful radiation or of radioactive material in any quantity sufficient to produce health concerns—that would affect Alaska seafood.

At Gorton's, our passion is bringing the safest, highest quality and freshest seafood to consumers. We are proud to have the highest quality and safety standards in the industry. Seafood products produced and distributed by Gorton’s comply fully with all international food safety regulations, and pose no associated risk to human health from radioactive properties.

In addition to our own monitoring of the situation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reassured us that they are closely monitoring the situation and have determined that there is no risk to the U.S. food supply based upon current information. Nonetheless, FDA says that their screening of imported products at U.S. borders will remain vigilant, and will be augmented with radiation screening of shipments. The FDA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, and other government regulators have testing protocols in place to continue to ensure no contaminated seafood reaches the U.S. market.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions.
